Annual Party @ Willie's Tropical Tattoo
Daytona Bike Week 2010, by Rodent
Having evolved from a little home grown backyard event into the most popular, most anticipated, and most fun no-bullshit party in Daytona (at both Bike Week and Biketoberfest). This year, booze was added to the mix, making a great event even better, if that’s possible.
Even in this slow year, Willie had record attendance, with some 159 bikes shown and crowds estimated by the Florida Hwy Patrol at +3500 - the largest event of any of the bike shows at this years Daytona Bike Week.
The crowds never materialized due to the recession and weather in the Northeastern part of the country, making this one of the slowest Bike Weeks in recent history.
We are looking at an industry that must reinvent itself. The leaders got so caught up in celebrity promoters and TV star builders that they forgot it was a fun big boy toy. Simply a powered bicycle to ride. The days of watching a bike build on the tube is over. Anyway, watching a mechanic build a bike is as interesting as watching grass grow.

Global Exchange Needs a Bike in Nepal!
San Francisco based Global Exchange is a very well known non profit and progressive organization doing good work around the world for many years. They also provide access to students and others to go to regions of the world that are off the beaten path and not politically popular or accessible. Their reality tours director Malia Everette tells us they have partnered up with an organization called SODEC in Nepal whos program director needs a motorcycle to travel in order to help better the lives of up to 200 families in their care.
Here is what Deana Zabaldo, high-altitude trekking guide and former Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal and Global Exchanges program officer needs: What does a motorcycle mean in Nepal? Accessibility and success! In one of the most extreme terrains on the earth, non-profit founder and director Parshu Dahal hikes hours--or often days!--to meet with farmers and monitor projects. He spends significant energy simply trying to get to where hes going, which pulls resources and time away from his work. Were hoping to change that. With the recent construction of a dirt road over the last two years, it is now possible for him to drive through these Himalayan hamlets creating greater connection with local villagers and monitoring progress more regularly--except that he needs a small bike to traverse the rugged mountain trail. Parshu has devoted nearly 10 years to community development work and has a strong track record of innovative programs and measurable success. Hes currently working with over 1000 farmers to build a tea industry in his region. For Parshu, a motorcycle is well beyond the reach of his salary as an English teacher and not something covered by grant funding--but in an area where half the week can be spent traveling to a village, it is a critical factor in his continued success. They are looking for a motorcycle donation or a money contribution in order to buy a reliable motorcycle there. A good motorcycle will cost up to $2,500 hundred dollars. There is also the possibility of shipping a bike to nepal from the U.S. if a good one can be acquired here. An ideal bike would be an easy to work on model, air cooled, 600cc or above, dual sport.
